The Nièvre’s pottery workers, coal merchants, boatmen; Lourdes’ farmers, merchants, millers, carrier worker; women, men and children from the Loire’s banks or the Gave’s banks, of the 17th or 19th century
Pottery workers, coal merchants, boatmen and farmers work hard. In those days, some women commit themselves to serve the poor. It is the institution of the sisters of charity of Nevers, which will soon radiate as far as Lourdes
19th century, the Gave’s banks :
The marketplace is in full swing. Bernadette Soubirous, a poverty-stricken child from the area becomes the messenger of a “lady dressed in white” which appears to her several times. Words of peace, of love, of healing. Crowds rush. Bernadette grows up in age and in dignity, in autority and joy ! She loves to nurse the poor. She commits to the sisters of charity of Nevers.
July 7th 1866, on the Loire’s banks :
Bernadette’s arriving at Nevers. She will nurse the poor. 1870, washers and merchants are chased away by the Prussians. The convent becomes a countryside hospital. More and more affected by sickness, Bernadette dies at 35 years old supported by her sisters’ affection.
« ! They call me hope, I am good for nothing! I maintain the embers when the cold of winter comes, when men no longer return from war, when hunger growls.
I light a fire that warms the body and heart of those who have no present, no past, no future ...!»
Thus tells the storyteller throughout the show…
And the narrator’s wonderful voice is that of the actor…Michael Lonsdale.
